Memorial book drive for drowned student

AMES Academy at Beaufort Elementary School will conduct the Norman "Kirk" Kirkland Memorial Book Drive Monday through Friday in conjunction with the school's spring book fair.

Kirkland, 13, drowned May 11.

At the time of his death, Norman attended Whale Branch Middle School. He previously attended AMES Academy, a magnet program for gifted and high-achieving students, in grades three through five.

He is fondly remembered at the school as an avid reader, according to a news release. Community members wishing to make a donation to the book drive can mail or drop off checks at Beaufort Elementary School.

Checks should be made payable to "Scholastic." All books purchased through the book drive will have a book plate indicating they are donated in memory of Norman "Kirk" Kirkland.
