Local Golf Notebook, May 16: Hank Haney IJGA's Velez wins Orlando Junior

Panama's Manuel Velez, a full-time student at Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy on Hilton Head Island, won the Boys 15-19 Division of the International Junior Golf Tour's Orlando Junior this past weekend at Falcon's Fire Golf Club in Kissimmee, Fla.

Velez won the two-day, 36-hole event with rounds of 71 and 72 to edge Yan Peng (Beijing, China) by one stroke.

In the Boys Under 14 Division, Hank Haney IJGA student Alan Xu of Hilton Head Island posted back-to-back rounds of 81 to defeat Aaron Elmore (Rincon, Ga.) by seven strokes.

Finally, Kelly Whaley (Farmington, Conn.), also a Hank Haney IJGA student, posted scores of 70 and 73 to edge classmate Thamonpat Siriko (Bangkok, Thailand) by one stroke.

HOLES-IN-ONE

  • Terry McClain hit a hole-in-one May 15 at Okatie Creek Golf Club. He used a 7-iron. Witnesses were Jeff Ashton, Dick Guter, Ralph Tygielski.

  • Joan D'Ambrosi hit a hole-in-one May 14 at Argent Lakes Golf Club. She used an 8-iron. Witnesses were Becky Schumacher and Vicki Vik.

  • Bob Pinter hit a hole-in-one May 8 at Moss Creek's South Course. Witnesses were Bob Lachenauer, Charlie Sciortion and Dick Hunter.
