Does GOP club want to be seen as scofflaw?

info@islandpacket.comMay 14, 2013

The May 10 headline and story regarding the Greater Bluffton Republican Club's intent to raffle off an AR-15 rifle as a fundraiser were somewhat disturbing.

The primary issue is not the selection of grand prize, which I personally believe is wrong-headed but is certainly the club's prerogative. But as I understand from a number of recent stories in the newspaper, raffles, with the sole exception of the state lottery, are categorically illegal as fundraisers in South Carolina.

Is scofflaw really the image that the organization wants to project?
