The Thomas Heyward Academy softball team finished up the SCISAA Class 2-A state tournament Saturday in Lexington, losing an 8-7, eight-inning battle with Williamsburg Academy to finish in a tie for fifth place.

"It was a good year," Rebels coach Bob Layman said. "We're very, very young. Got a lot of great games ahead of us."

Thomas Heyward held a 7-2 lead in the sixth inning against Williamsburg, but lost its focus, allowing them to tie it up with five runs.

The Rebels had stayed alive by defeating Thomas Sumter, 10-1, and Pee Dee Academy, 10-5, earlier in the day, but couldn't continue their run through the loser's bracket.

An opening-game loss on Friday night to Robert E. Lee, 6-3, put the Rebels behind the 8-ball.

"Our first game killed us," Layman said. "That wasn't a tough team, we just panicked."

Selice Daley hit .500 for the tournament, and Brielle Jungblut, Taylor Ernestine and Morgan Peeples batted .400. Freshman Liz Bunton, and eighth-graders Haylee Wade and Hannah Cannon batted .333 for the weekend.

"We hit the ball well," Layman said. "They stepped up when they had to."

Thomas Heyward finishes the year 16-8. The team only graduates two starters, Ernestine and Jungblut.

Jungblut was 8 for 8 in the final two games of the tournament. Ernestine pitched and got the victory against Pee Dee, and she was 4 for 5 with three RBIs in the win over Thomas Sumter.

Daley went the distance in the Rebels' other three games, going 1-2. She had eight strikeouts against Thomas Sumter, a game in which she went 3 for 5 with four RBIs at the plate.
