The crash of a Jeep Wrangler into The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette building late Friday was apparently the end result of an incident between two groups of teenagers at a local movie theater, according to a Bluffton Police Department spokesman.

Lt. Joe Babkiewicz said the vehicle that slammed into the back of the newspapers' offices on Buck Island Road in Bluffton late Friday night was either following or being followed by another car .

The two cars were carrying two groups of teenagers who had apparently been involved in an incident outside a nearby movie theater, Babkiewicz said.

Babkiewicz did not disclose the make of the vehicle that crashed into the building, but a reporter who was at the office at the time said it was a Jeep Wrangler.

The impact of the crash ripped a sink and counter from an inside break room wall, left a crack in the wall several feet high and broke water pipes, causing temporary flooding.

Babkiewicz said an investigation into the incident and crash is ongoing.
