A man who ran out of a Bluffton liquor store Wednesday with stolen items was quickly caught by a Beaufort County sheriff's deputy who happened to be nearby, a Bluffton Police spokeswoman said.

The call went to officers just before 6 p.m. after a man stole merchandise from a store on Baylor Drive, Capt. Angela McCall-Tanner said. Bluffton police quickly had the shoplifter in custody, thanks to the deputy who spotted him, she said.

A witness said police had a man on the ground handcuffed in a parking lot at the shopping center on Baylor Drive.

Bluffton police have not released details about what was stolen.
