On April 18, a long line of art lovers began entering the front door of the All About Art Club in Sun City Hilton Head for a look at the winning entries of the club's 2013 Spring Art Show and Sale.

Best in Show honors went to Pat Overton for her pastel titled, "Smokey Mountain Autumn,'' a bucolic portrait of a winding country road sheltered by a colorful palette of trees, with mountains as a backdrop.

"I love the mountains and I had a photo of a road going into the mountains and just decided to do a pastel of it. It took about a week to do,'' Overton said.

Overton said she "turns out quite a few pictures,'' to the point that the walls of her home look like an English salon, rooms known for their chockablock gatherings of art.

Overton took lessons from Nancy Dolce, "one of the best artists in North Carolina,'' and said she works in pastels, watercolor, acrylic and oil.

Linda Grady, an artist and the president of the All About Art Club, said the judges for this year's event were Richard Coyne of Bluffton and Michael Pearson of Beaufort, artists formerly from New York.

A fast worker like Overton, Benton Bowen took second place in the drawing category for his piece "Tenant House,'' a work he did after briefly studying drawing. The building is located near Statesboro, Ga.

"I just took up drawing one month ago. I'm studying under Linda Beer. I have been painting for some years,'' Bowen said.

Sun City art teacher and All About Art Club vice president Linda Beer took first place in drawing with her colored pencil piece titled "Fruit Bowl.''

"I've been working in the medium since October 2012, because I wanted to add color and I didn't want to add watercolor. Colored pencil is so beautiful,'' Beer said.

Grady said she always is impressed by the quality of work presented by the club's roughly 300 members. This year's show and sale featured works with subjects such as a ballerina, a high-heeled shoe, Lowcountry vistas, beach scenes, floral motifs and a portrait of a young man from Assisi, Italy.

Although the majority of winning entries and submissions were done by women, Grady said the male membership has increased during her tenure, and men are attaining leadership positions in the club.

Works in the medium of watercolor led the way in entries, but this year there were more works in mixable oils than in previous years. Two novice entries were submitted this year, Grady said.
