Hilton Head Island resident Thomas Melanson has won a $2,500 National Merit Scholarship. Melanson attends the S.C. Governor's School for Science and Mathematics.

Melanson is one of 2,500 students across the country chosen as a scholarship winner from a pool of 15,000 finalists. Winners of the scholarships are the finalists in each state with the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills and potential for success in rigorous college studies.

Students qualify for the National Merit Scholarship competition through their scores on the Preliminary SAT and continue in the competition based on an application that details their academic record, scores on standardized tests, leadership in school and community activities, an essay written by the finalist and the recommendation of a school official.
