High School Roundup, May 7: Beaufort High, Battery Creek girls among playoff soccer winners

Beaufort High 4, Stratford 1: The host Eagles advanced in the Class 4-A playoffs with a win at home.

Anna Smith and Molly Murphy had two goals each to spark Beaufort High.

Kayley Gilbert was the Beaufort High goalkeeper.

The Eagles (9-9-2) return to playoff action Wednesday against an undetermined opponent.

Battery Creek 7, Timberland 0: The Dolphins cruised to a Class 2-A playoff victory behind four goals from Ruth Ekland.

Scoring single goals for Battery Creek were Cali Collier, Marjury Gonzalez and Dolce Huerta.

Goalkeeper Tabitha Spurlock made three saves.

Battery Creek next travels to Bishop England on Wednesday.


Beaufort Academy 3, Trinity-Byrnes 0: John Mathai, Mike Bhoi and Finn Koppernaes scored goals to lead the Eagles (15-2) to a SCISAA Class 2-A/1-A first-round playoff win.

Andrew Gray and Jack Olsson had assists, while Reyn Robinson made six saves on his way to a shutout in goal.

"We had a great game," Beaufort Academy coach Bill Dalton said. "We were a little shaky in the first half and came out a little sluggish. But we made them chase the ball a lot and wore them out."

The Eagles will play Wednesday in the semifinals, either at home against Spartanburg Day or on the road at King's Academy.

Cardinal Newman 9, Hilton Head Prep 2: Despite holding a 1-0 lead 25 minutes in, the Dolphins (9-11) were routed by Cardinal Newman.

Teron Daley and Trevor Marbut scored goals for Hilton Head Prep, while Archer Brooks and Keylan Hanna had assists. Zenon Parker made 10 saves in goal.


Hilton Head Island High: The Seahawks won the Class 3-A Lower State finals by a shot over Socastee at Black Bear Golf Club outside Conway.

Hilton Head High's Andrew Orischak was medalist with an 18-hole 70. Also competing for the Seahawks were Troy Hoisington (80), Chris O'Donnell (80), Gavin Lindstrom (82) and Brooks Moody (83).

The Seahawks earned a spot in next week's finals at the Hackler Course at Coastal Carolina University.

Beaufort High: The Eagles' Josh Fickes placed eighth overall while competing at the Class 4-A Lower State finals at Sunset Golf Club in Sumter, earning a spot in next week's state finals at Furman.

Fickes carded an 18-hole 72.

Bluffton: Bluffton finished tied for seventh in the Class 4-A Lower State finals with two other teams at 316.

Senior Wesley Long led Bluffton with a 73, followed by Alec Weary (75), Drew Weary (84) and Brandi Hammonds (84).
