A man walking down Martin Luther King Drive on Saint Helena Island said he was beaten and robbed on Friday evening, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

The man said a car pulled up behind him and its occupants asked him to buy them cigarettes shortly after 6:15 p.m., said spokeswoman Sgt. Robin McIntosh.

When he refused, they assaulted him, beat him with sticks, took cash from his pockets and fled, McIntosh said.

The Sheriff's Office is expected to issue a news release soon with more information on the suspects.
