Nearly 1,000 Lowcountry residents walked 3.1 miles from Coligny Plaza through the North and South Forest Beach neighborhoods to raise $160,000 for the American Heart Association's Lowcountry Heart Walk on April 13.

"It was incredible to see so many people in our community come together to raise awareness around our nation's number one killer, heart disease," said event co-chair Leslie Richardson.

The American Heart Association's goal is to improve the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20 percent and reduce deaths from cardiovascular disease and stroke by 20 percent.
