Prep Roundup, May 4: Thomas Heyward baseball team advances in playoffs

Thomas Heyward Academy: The Rebels swept a doubleheader over Dorchester Academy in the second round of the SCISAA Class 2-A playoffs, winning by scores of 9-2 and 7-3.

In the opener, Winning pitcher Ryan Day went seven innings, allowing three hits and one earned run while striking out six.

Zack Newton started the nightcap and struck out seven to earn the win.

"Our pitching was huge," Rebels coach Nic Shuford said. "Ryan went the distance and really kept them at bay, and then in Game 2, Zack came out and gave us a strong five innings."

At the plate, Day had three hits and three RBIs in the first game, and Newton went 1 for 3 with an RBI to help his cause in the finale.

Thomas Heyward's Forest Richardson had three hits and scored twice in the first game.

The Rebels (15-5) will open the next round of the playoffs Tuesday on the road at an undetermined opponent.

GIRLS SOCCER

Hilton Head Island 5, Beaufort High 0: Claudia Murphy scored twice and Bridgette Noonan, Rebecca Johnston and Natalie Mlodzinski added goals as the Seahawks (18-3) won their final game before they open the Class 3-A Lower State playoffs at home Monday against Gilbert.

Sam Womack earned the shutout in goal for Hilton Head Island.
