Great expectations for comic, podcaster Marc Maron's new show 'Maron' on IFC

Marc Maron stars in "Maron," which premieres at 10 p.m. May 3 on IFC.

At first, I wasn't sure I liked comedian Marc Maron.

I was barely five minutes into my first episode of Maron's massively popular podcast "WTF?," and his comedic style, one based largely on his own neuroses, self-doubt and anger, was grating.

But I stuck with the show and soon found Maron's neurotic approach to comedy and life entertaining and even endearing. And, as a journalist, I appreciated his approach to interviewing such comedy and entertainment bigwigs as Robin Williams, Aziz Ansari, Jack White and James Mercer from The Shins.

Heck, his interviews with Gallagher, Carlos Mencia and Dane Cook alone have become the stuff of podcasting legend.

So, I was thrilled when Maron first discussed on his show that he was in talks with the cable channel IFC for his own sitcom, though the premise of said show remained unknown.

Over the following weeks and months, details trickled onto various entertainment and comedy blogs that revealed the show would be semi autobiographical, a la Louis C.K.'s award-winning "Louie," and my excitement continued to grow.

That anticipation reached a fever pitch when, in March, IFC released the first of two trailers previewing the show, simply titled "Maron," and I found it was exactly what I hoped it would be.

Based on the trailer, particularly the first, it seems Maron will have to do little acting and instead will simply be the crippingly insecure, sardonic, angry, but endlessly funny guy whom his podcast fans have come to know and begrudingly love.

And then there are the cameos.

The trailers feature appearances by Denis Leary, Aubrey Plaza, Mark Duplass, Adam Scott, Anthony Jeselnik and scores of other top comedians whose mere involvement with "Maron" bodes well for the show. In other words, the celebrities I just mentioned aren't doing guest spots on "Whitney."

"Maron" will premiere at 10 p.m. May 3 on IFC.

I know I'll be pulling hard for this, as the trailer describes him, "overnight success 20 years in the making."
