The League of Women Voters of Hilton Head Island/Bluffton Area is pleased that the Beaufort County Board of Elections and Registration provides for absentee voting. In person absentee voting for the 1st District special election Tuesday is available at two locations: 61-B Ulmer Road in Bluffton and 15 John Galt Road in Beaufort. For hours and additional information, including valid reasons for absentee voting, voters should either call the Board of Elections at 843-255-6900 or visit the website, www.bcgov.net/vote.

The state has adopted a new voter photo ID requirement. Voters may bring one of the following forms of photo identification to the polls: A S.C. driver's license, a photo ID issued by the state Department of Motor Vehicles, voter registration card with photo, United States passport or federal military ID.

Registered voters who do not have a valid photo ID can vote in the May 7 election by requesting a "reasonable impediment affidavit." Registered voters who have a photo ID but do not have it with them at the polls can vote, but they must present the ID to the county Board of Elections and Registration before the election results are certified.

The league urges all registered voters to vote in this important election either Tuesday or by absentee ballot.
