Starkey departing as Beaufort County's CFO

Beaufort County's chief financial officer David Starkey is leaving May 17 for a position with the S.C. Comptroller General's Office.

Starkey, who joined the county in 2007 and oversaw the county's annual financial reporting, among other things, said he will help the state prepare financial reports.

"It is with mixed emotions that I am moving back to Columbia, as I will really miss this place and the people I work with/for," he wrote in an email. "But, the new position holds a great challenge for me, and I am excited for the new career opportunity."

County administrator Gary Kubic, who said Starkey has done "an incredible job," plans to consider internal candidates first for the position before looking outside the county. No timeline was given for finding a replacement.
