Recreation Briefs, May 1: Pickleball tournament wraps up on Hilton Head

PICKLEBALL TOURNAMENT HELD ON HILTON HEAD ISLAND

Fifty players gathered for Hilton Head Island's first pickleball tournament over the weekend at the Island Rec Center, with medals being handed out in men's, women's and mixed doubles divisions.

The tournament featured a number of highly ranked players from around the Southeast.

Pickleball is played on a court about a quarter of the size of a tennis court. Players hit a plastic Wiffle ball with a racket about the size of racquetball racket.

Medal winners were:

Men's Doubles -- Gold: Bob Grueser & Ken Kiurski; Silver: John Dreier & Mitch Laine; Bronze: Dennis Zeleski & Pedro Arevalo

Women's Doubles -- Gold: Denise Boutin & Nancy Whiteman; Silver: Teresa Shull & Trish Snyder; Bronze: Joyce Bridwell & Mickey Hoehl

Mixed Doubles -- Gold: Teresa Shull & Sean Shull; Silver: Ken Kiurski & Cathy Taylor; Bronze: Frank Piscani & Mickey Hoehl

BONGIORNO SETS STATE RECORD IN 5K RACE

Jean Bongiorno, of Sun City Hilton Head, set a South Carolina age group record on Saturday in the Walterboro Rice Run 5-kilometer race.

Bongiorno, who finished 113th out of 337 runners, won the 75-79 women's age division with a record time of 30 minutes, 3 seconds. She bested the previous age division record, set in 2004, by 17 seconds.

Bongiorno now holds six age group records in the state: 5K, 8K, 10K, 12K, 15K and half marathon.
