Gunfire in a Hilton Head Island apartment complex damaged a car Monday night, and the owner said she doesn't know who fired the shots or why, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies arrived at Hilton Head Gardens on Southwood Park Drive at 9 p.m. and found a large crowd in the parking lot of the 100 building, according to a news release.

They also found a car with a bullet hole and a shattered window. The car's owner, a 19-year-old woman, provided few details about the events leading up to the shooting, saying she heard gunfire and came out to find her damaged car, according to the release.

Witnesses reported seeing two unidentified black males banging on the door of the woman's apartment. After speaking with a woman in the unit, the men walked back to the parking lot. One pulled out a handgun and fired several rounds into the car before they both left in a black Dodge Charger, the release said.

No other property damage and no injuries were reported. Anyone with information is asked to call investigator Cpl. D. Seifert at 843-255-3414 or Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC (274-6372).
