You can help Habitat help deserving families

As a board member for Hilton Head Regional Habitat for Humanity and a frequent volunteer at the Habitat Restore, I am so excited about our venture to provide decent, affordable housing in The Glen on Hilton Head Island.

We have 16 families on a waiting list for the first 16 homes we will build. These families have worked so very hard to reach this point, and it is truly heartwarming to work with them through this process. We are raising money for the infrastructure (roads, water, sewer) for Phase I of this undertaking and are nearing our goal.

My hope is that you will assist us in breaking the cycle of poverty for these homebuyers and more. During a recent workshop, "Being a Good Neighbor," these families started to realize their dream is coming true.

Remember, Habitat offers a "hand up, not a hand out." Each family works 300 to 400 hours -- sweat equity -- as well as attending mandatory workshops. They will have a mortgage to pay, just like you and me. I look forward to each of these homebuyers becoming deserving, productive members of our community.
