Former Hilton Head Prep QB Michael Hermann gets invitation to Oakland Raiders rookie camp

"I've always been told, 'if you're good enough, they'll find you,'" Michael Hermann said Sunday. " 'Someone from the NFL will be watching.' "

That proved true Saturday night when the former Hilton Head Prep quarterback got a phone call from the Oakland Raiders organization inviting him to their rookie camp May 10 in Oakland.

"It was a big relief," Hermann said.

Hermann, who led Hilton Head Prep to the 2007 SCISAA Class 2-A state championship, said he was told the team would have an open competition for the backup quarterback position, but that he was open to whatever plans the Oakland brass may have for him.

"I'm just grateful for the opportunity," Hermann said. "I'll go wherever they want me to go."

Hermann started at quarterback at Division III Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for four seasons.

In 2012, he completed 60 percent of his passes for the Engineers for 2,366 yards and 23 touchdowns with eight interceptions. On the ground, he rushed for 510 yards and seven touchdowns with a long of 88 yards.

In all, Hermann accounted for nearly 79 percent of RPI's total yardage this season and was named the Liberty League's Offensive Player of the Year for the second straight year.

At 6-foot-5 and 250 pounds, Hermann has reportedly run a 4.64-second 40-yard dash.

Hermann says he's unsure how the camp works, but his basic understanding is that he'll workout with other rookies for three days and afterward, he'll either be offered a free agent contact to come to training camp or he'll be let go.

"I really don't know," he said.

One thing he does know, however, is what he can offer an NFL team.

"My strongest asset is my athletic ability," Hermann said. "I'm mobile, I can extend plays. And the learning curve, I can learn the system quickly."
