The Beaufort County School District was one of seven local government agencies in South Carolina to receive a national award for online transparency.

The district received a Sunny Award from Sunshine Review, a national nonprofit that advocates government openness.

Issued annually, the Sunny Awards recognize government websites in the nation "that proactively share the public information that empowers citizens and keeps government accountable to the people," according to a news release.

The Sunshine Review evaluated the district's website based on details pertaining to budgets, meetings, lobbying, financial audits, contracts, academic performance, public records and taxes.

The Island Packet is pleased to provide this opportunity to share information, experiences and observations about what's in the news. Some of the comments may be reprinted elsewhere in the site or in the newspaper. We encourage lively, open debate on the issues of the day, and ask that you refrain from profanity, hate speech, personal comments and remarks that are off point. Thank you for taking the time to offer your thoughts.
