BATON ROUGE, La. -- Tanner English broke a 2-2 tie with an RBI triple in the top of the ninth inning and scored on a balk as 10th-ranked South Carolina defeated second-ranked LSU, 4-2, on Saturday in front of a crowd of 10,246, the largest in Alex Box Stadium history.

The Gamecocks (32-12 overall, 12-8 SEC) won despite LSU's 14-8 advantage in hits. Eight different Gamecocks recorded hits.

Raph Rhymes went 3 for 4 with two runs for LSU (39-5, 16-4).

South Carolina senior left-hander Adam Westmoreland (5-1) earned the win with a scoreless inning of relief. Tyler Webb's scoreless ninth marked his 13th save of the season.

Before the ninth inning dramatics, both South Carolina sophomore Jordan Montgomery and LSU junior right-hander Ryan Eades battled back and forth in a pitchers' duel.

The rubber game of the series is set for 3 p.m. Sunday and will be televised on ESPN.
