Prep Roundup, April 27: Beaufort High softball team stays alive in 4A playoffs

Beaufort High 8, South Florence 3: The Eagles bounced back from a first-round loss to Wando to win an elimination game in the Class 4-A playoffs.

Jenny Mullins earned her 17th win of the season for the Eagles. She scattered three hits, walked one and struck out nine.

Beaufort High's Michelle Brown had three hits, and Chelsea Welty doubled twice. Maddy Berry and Pressley Thomas also had two hits apiece for the Eagles.

The Eagles (19-9) next travel to Lexington on Monday. A win there would earn Beaufort High a rematch against Wando, which blanked the Eagles 5-0 on Tuesday at Mt. Pleasant.

Gilbert 8, Hilton Head High 1: Aileen Moore, Macy Moore, Macy King and Caylee Osborne had singles, but the Seahawks couldn't muster much more than that in their Class 3-A playoff opener.

"We just had some errors in the field that cost us," Hilton Head High coach Sarah Beachkofsky said.

Whitney Halley gave up four earned runs and struck out four in going the distance for the Seahawks.

Hilton Head High (5-13) drops into an elimination game 6 p.m. Monday at Marlboro County. Marlboro County was upset by third-seeded Georgetown on Friday.


Barnwell 10, Battery Creek 0, 6 innings (Thursday): Battery Creek dropped into the elimination bracket of the Class 2-A district playoffs with the loss.

"It was frustrating, because we hit the ball well," Dolphins coach Shawn Morrison said. "As a team, we only struck out one time, but it just seemd like everything we hit was played well or hit right at a person."

"They were able to capitalize on our mistakes, and they didn't make any mistakes themselves," Morrison added.

Michael Jennings had two of the six hits for the Dolphins (11-10), who host Wade Hampton at 11 a.m. Saturday in an elimination game.


Academic Magnet 3, Beaufort High 1: The hosts scored twice in the opening half and once late in the final period to hold off the hard-charging Eagles.

Josh Vellucci scored his 28th goal of the season as Beaufort High cut into its 2-0 halftime deficit.

Beaufort High goalkeeper Mack Stansell saved a penalty kick to keep the score at 2-1 before yielding a late goal as the Eagles fell to 11-8.

Beaufort High plays at Battery Creek on Tuesday.

Pinewood Prep 4, Hilton Head Prep 0: Goalkeeper Zen Wiggins kept Hilton Head Prep in the game, finishing with 24 saves in the loss.

The game was scoreless until the 38th minute, and Pinewood Prep held a 1-0 lead through most of the second half before scoring three late goals to put it away.

The loss wrapped up the region schedule for Hilton Head Prep (7-10 overall, 2-4 region), which plays at Hilton Head Christian Academy on Tuesday.


Hilton Head Prep 3, Pinewood Prep 2 (OT): Halie Parker scored her second goal of the game with about three minutes remaining in the second 5-minute overtime session to lift the Dolphins.

Parker and Carley Willey had first-half goals for Hilton Head Prep (9-8 overall, 5-6 region), and Catherine Sheehan had an assist.

The Dolphins play at Hilton Head Christian Academy at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
