A 72-year-old Port Royal man was charged with leaving the scene of an accident Thursday after he hit a 41-year-old Port Royal woman earlier in the day and drove away, according to a town police report.

The man's Kia Sedona minivan hit the woman as she was walking through a crosswalk at Ribaut Road and Johnny Morrall Circle. He stopped briefly before leaving the scene. When Port Royal police arrived, the woman showed them a cellphone photo of the van as it left the scene, the report said.

Police later found the man at his home, where he admitted to hitting the woman. He said he left because there was nowhere to stop his van and that he had rolled down his window and apologized, the report said.

The woman complained of pain in her leg, which appeared to be swollen, according to the police report. She was not transported to the hospital, instead telling police she would follow up with a doctor.
