A barge loaded with trailers holding marsh tacky horses and equipment travels past Palmetto Bay Marina on Hilton Head Island towards Daufuskie Island Friday morning in preparation for the fifth annual Marsh Tacky Beach Race.

Previous marsh tacky races were held on Hilton Head Island during the annual Gullah Celebration. The venue has changed, but the format will be the same -- riders will push the small horses to run as fast as possible over the 400-yard beach course. About 20 horses are expected to compete.

Races start Saturday at 2 p.m. near Melrose on the Beach.
