Suspect in St. Helena shooting arrested, charged with attempted murder

The suspect in a shooting that occurred earlier this month on St. Helena Island has been arrested and charged with attempted murder.

Ervin Smalls II was taken into custody Thursday, according to the Beaufort County Detention Center log.

Smalls, 25, is accused of shooting a 40-year-old man in the leg April 11 outside of a Shiney Road home. According to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office, several witnesses identified Smalls as the man who approached several people outside the home and began shooting.

The victim told deputies he and Smalls had several previous confrontations and that Smalls owed him money. One of the altercations, about two weeks before the shooting at Island Plaza in the Frogmore area of St. Helena, turned physical, the victim told authorities.

Smalls has been charged with attempted murder, assault and battery in the second degree, possession of a firearm/knife during a violent crime, and possession of a firearm by a felon. He is being held for prosecution, according to the jail log.
