USC Beaufort softball team trying for Sun Conference title this weekend

sports@islandpacket.comApril 26, 2013

In a week that already saw the University of South Carolina Beaufort softball program make history when it was named as one of 10 host sites for the inaugural NAIA Softball National Championship Opening Round, the Sand Sharks could make some more history this weekend.

The 10th-ranked Sand Sharks (35-3 overall, 11-1 Sun Conference) host Warner for a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. Friday and Southeastern for a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Saturday.

With one victory against Warner, USC Beaufort would clinch the Sun Conference regular-season title in just its second year as a program.

The Sand Sharks are led at the plate by C.J. Browder (.479, 15 home runs, 58 RBIs) and Katie Rietkovich (.390, 13 home runs, 32 RBIs). On the mound, Kristy Cook is 16-0 with a 1.97 ERA, and Thomas Heyward Academy product Ashlie Layman is 9-0 with a 2.05 ERA and two saves.
