A man was charged with child neglect Thursday after he left his 3-year-old son unattended while searching for his wife after an argument in Burton, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies arrested the 30-year-old man after finding his son asleep and alone in the home, Sgt. Robin McIntosh said. Deputies found the child while investigating a crashed, abandoned vehicle in Burton. The car's registration led them to the house.

When the man arrived home, he told deputies he had been looking for his wife after they had an argument. He said he found her in the vehicle crashed in a ditch near the intersection of County Shed Road and Jennings Road and brought her to a friend's house.

McIntosh said the investigation into the incident continues and that more charges are likely.

The man was released from the Beaufort County Detention Center after posting a $1,092 bond, according to the jail log.
