The Richard V. Woods Memorial Bridge, which connects Beaufort to Lady's Island near downtown, was stuck open for several hours Thursday afternoon, leaving drivers forced to take alternate routes.

It re-opened to car traffic at about 4 p.m. and will be closed to boat traffic until further notice, according to a tweet from the Beaufort County Emergency Management Department.

According to S.C. Department of Transportation officials, the bridge would not lock into place correctly. The bridge, which spans the Beaufort River on Carteret Street, got stuck open at about 1 p.m. Drivers were encouraged to use the J.E. McTeer Bridge, which spans the river on Lady's Island Drive, to get on or off Lady's Island.
