A Lady's Island woman was charged with child cruelty Thursday morning after her 8-year-old daughter told school officials that her mother had abused her, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

Tawana Keysha Prince, 28, was charged by the Sheriff's Office after the girl went to the school nurse's office with a burn mark and said her mother had burned her with a hot spoon as punishment, Sgt. Robin McIntosh said.

McIntosh said Prince's five children were all taken into emergency protective custody. The investigation is ongoing.

Prince was released from the Beaufort County Jail on a $5,000 personal recognizance bond, according to the jail log.
