High School Roundup, April 23: Hilton Head Christian Academy boys tied atop SCISAA state tournament

Hilton Head Christian finished the opening day of the SCISAA boys state championship golf tournament in a share of the lead with Pinewood Prep following Monday's conclusion of play at the Hackler Course at Coastal Carolina University in Conway.

Hilton Head Christian posted a team total of 312 to tie for the overall lead heading into today's final round.

JD Lehman, Bryson Nimmer and Jonathan Schuble each had a 77 to top the Eagles' scoring list. Hilton Head Christian's Matt Lehman and R.J. Bartolomuccieach shot 81.

The final round takes place today.

BOYS SOCCER

Battery Creek 13, Whale Branch 0: William Lopez and senior Thomas Hunter each had three goals for the host Dolphins on Senior Night.

Other seniors scoring goals for Battery Creek were Tierrablanca with two and Wyatt Treithick with one. Senior Manny Gonzalez picked up an assist.

Jon Saullo also scored twice for Battery Creek (8-8).

Christian Saunders was the Dolphins' goalkeeper.

GIRLS SOCCER

Battery Creek 3, Whale Branch 1: Cali Caulder scored twice to spark Battery Creek.

Caroline Vido scored once and picked up an assist for the Dolphins (8-3, 6-2).

Tabitha Spurlock played goalkeeper for Battery Creek.

The Dolphins next host Wade Hampton on Thursday.

BASEBALL

Beaufort High 6, Battery Creek 1: Brady Cormier and David Tilton had two hits each to lead the Eagles.

Beaufort High's Carson Gregory went 1 for 2 with three RBIs.

Winning pitcher Bradley Brown went 5 1-3 innings and struck out seven.

Zach Mahan took the loss for the Dolphins.

The Eagles (13-8) open the postseason at home Thursday against Wando.

Thomas Heyward 11, Hilton Head Prep 5: Conner Driscoll had two hits and scored four runs, Forrest Richardson went 2 for 2 with two RBIs and two runs scored, and the Rebels won the first of two games in as many days.

Zack Newton earned the mound win, and Ryan Day collected the save for Thomas Heyward.

Sophomore Greg Warren took the loss for the Dolphins.

The Rebels (9-5) return to action today against visiting Bible Baptist.

BOYS TENNIS

Hilton Head Christian 4, Bluffton 2: Hilton Head Christian Academy warmed up for Wednesday's showdown with fellow power Hilton Head Prep with a 4-2 victory over Bluffton.

The Eagles won four of five singles matches, including a gritty 6-3, 6-7, 10-8 victory for No. 4 Cameron Clark against Bluffton's Morgan Philoxene.

Davis Rosenbloom won in three sets at No. 3 singles, rallying for a 2-6, 6-3, 10-6 victory over Alex Likins.

Wednesday's clash between the Dolphins and Eagles, which feature two of the state's top-ranked juniors at No. 1 singles, will take place at 4 p.m. at Hilton Head Beach and Tennis Resort.

Singles: No. 1 -- Charlie Drake (HHCA) def. Aaron newland 6-2, 6-4; No. 2 -- Ben Likins (HHCA) def. Richard Snyder 6-2, 6-1; No. 3 -- Davis Rosenbloom (B) def. Alex Likins 2-6, 6-3, 10-6; No. 4 -- Cameron Clark (HHCA) def. Morgan Philoxene 6-3, 6-7, 10-8; No.5 -- Walker Wood (HHCA) def. Matthew Bornstein 6-5, 7-5.

Doubles: No. 2 -- Dakota Story/Diego Garcia (B) def. Tyler Hall/Tate Lucci 6-0, 6-1.
