Dr. Raymond Cox has been named Volunteers in Medicine Hilton Head Island's executive medical director. He will start July 15.

Cox is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology. He has served since July 2011 as senior vice president of medical affairs and chief medical officer at Providence Hospital in Washington, D.C.

He will be responsible for all medical, dental and mental-health operations at VIM, supervising all 25 staff members and 700 medical and lay volunteers who provide free health care for more than 33,000 patients in need each year.

Cox said in a news release that he looks forward to helping VIM "navigate the changes that are occurring in health care" and provide high-quality care for people on Hilton Head and Daufuskie Island.
