A 23-year-old Lady's Island man is suspected of threatening to burn his mother with an aerosol can and lighter during an altercation Sunday night, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies were called at about 8 p.m. to a Doe Drive home, where the assault is alleged to have occurred. Officers also were called to a business on Fairfield Road, where the suspect went afterward.

The mother said she had an argument with her son, who threw her phone onto a table with fragile valuables, according to an incident report. She told him to be careful.

He went into his bedroom and returned with a black aerosol can and a lighter, according to the report.

"I'm going to burn (you) ... this time, like I've said I would," he said, according to the report.

While about three feet away from his mother, the suspect started spraying the can and lit the contents on fire, according to the report. The woman ran from the house, fearing for her life.

The suspect drove to the Fairfield Road business, where deputies met him. He gave deputies permission to search his room, and a 4-ounce Axe Body Spray and a small bag of marijuana was recovered. He was cited for simple possession of marijuana and released.
