Vehicle abandoned in Hilton Head Island's Jarvis Creek after crash

A vehicle that crashed off of Spanish Wells Road into a light pole before landing in Jarvis Creek was found empty early Sunday, authorities said.

Firefighters with the Town of Hilton Head Island Fire & Rescue Division went out to the crash but left after discovering "there wasn't anybody in the car," said Battalion Chief Mick Mayers.

There was, however, a "lot of damage" near the scene of the crash to the pole and a guardrail, he said.

Lt. Alfredo Givens said the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office is investigating.

Mayers said a portion of Spanish Wells Road was closed until 8 or 9 a.m. Sunday.
