Recreation Briefs, April 21: Pickleball tournament coming to Hilton Head Island

sports@islandpacket.comApril 20, 2013

The Hilton Head Island Recreation Center is hosting the island's first pickleball tournament this Friday and Saturday.

The doubles tournament has attracted nearly 50 players coming from as far away as New York and Florida. Men's and women's doubles will be played starting at 8:30 a.m. Friday. Mixed doubles will begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday. Gold, silver, and bronze medals will be awarded.

Pickleball is played on a court about a quarter of the size of a tennis court (20 feet by 44 feet) with a net 34 inches high. Players hit a Wiffleball with a square wooden racket about the size of racquetball racket. Only the serving team can score, and the first team to 11 wins. It can be played as a singles or doubles competition.

Beaufort's club lacrosse team, the Sons of Beaufort, fell just short of capturing the South Division championship of the American Lacrosse Association recently, as they were defeated by the Savannah Christian Raiders, 12-10.

The Beaufort team, in its fourth year of existence, held a 5-4 lead at halftime and extended the advantage to 9-5 in the third quarter. Savannah rallied to tie the match at 10 with two minutes remaining, and then put the game away with two late goals.
