A sound-dampening building above a testing lab for XRDi in the Beaufort Industrial Village caught fire Friday night, Burton Fire Department Deputy Chief Tom Webb said.

The fire was reported at 7:25 p.m. by employees at the business, which specializes in small-engine technology. Firefighters were on the scene at 7:30 p.m.

It appears the fire started in the ventilation system of the building, which is behind and separate from the main office at 103 Industrial Village Road, Webb said.

When the fire truck arrived, smoke was coming from the roof. The inside was engulfed inside when fire fighters opened the door, he said. It took about 10 minutes to knock the flames down, and the building was seriously damaged.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but it does not appear to be suspicious, Webb said.

Also responding were the Beaufort/Port Royal Fire Department, Beaufort County EMS and city of Beaufort Police Department.
