A St. Helena Island man was conned out of nearly $2,000 by someone claiming to be his nephew, according to a report filed Thursday at the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

The report said a man claiming to be the victim's nephew called him March 14, telling the victim he was in Mexico and needed money. After wiring $1,900 through Western Union, the victim contacted his nephew to find out that he was not in Mexico and had not asked for any money.
