Evelene Stevenson will play abolitionist and educator Laura Towne at 3 p.m. Monday for a living history program on the origins of the Penn Center.

Stevenson, a re-enactor and owner of The Spirit of Old Beaufort tour company, will portray Towne at the Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn on Hilton Head Island.

Towne and her lifelong friend Ellen Murray founded a school in 1862 for former slaves on St. Helena Island, which was eventually named the Penn School.

Reservations are required; call 843-689-6767, extension 223. A $5 donation per person is requested; no charge for museum members.
