The Beaufort Symphony Orchestra will present "Hollywood Extravaganza" at 7:30 p.m. April 18 and 3 p.m. April 21 at the University of South Carolina Beaufort Center for the Arts. Details: 800-595-4849 or www.beaufortorchestra.org

Music and movie lovers will get a chance to travel back in time this week thanks to a program being offered by the Beaufort Symphony Orchestra.

The 60-piece orchestra will perform on stage while a large movie screen shows silent films in the background. "Hollywood Extravaganza" will feature clips from some of the most famous silent films set to musical selections from "A Night On Bald Mountain," "Danse Macabre," "Peer Gynt Suite," "Finlandia" and "The Firebird Suite."

Maestro Fred Devyatkin said the orchestra contracted with a company called Video Ideas Productions. The company's program, Flicker, sequences film scenes with a live orchestra.

Devyatkin said an ensemble director from the Marine Corps band will control the films, accelerating and pausing the program to coordinate the scenes with the orchestra.

"It's a very exciting concept," Devyatkin said. "It's something that was very difficult to do in years past, before we had the technology. It's going to be very exciting."

When he first heard about the program, Devyatkin said he wasn't so sure about it. But then he found out the music they were going to play.

"There are some really great repertoires and great old movies," he said. "It's kind of a multimedia happy marriage that's going on."

He said nothing like this has ever been done in South Carolina or Georgia.

"It's a very exciting program," Devyatkin said. "And it's not something that's going to happen all the time."
