When Candice Glover auditioned for "American Idol," she vowed never to sing a Mariah Carey song.

"Singing a song by Mariah, in front of Mariah, is just crazy," the St. Helena Island native said at the time.

But after developing a relationship with the pop-diva and receiving praise from the judge each week on the show, Glover chose to sing Carey and Whitney Houston's "When You Believe" in the "Idol" Top 5 Wednesday night.

Carey was more than fine with the decision.

"I think you can sing anything in front of anybody anywhere," the judge said after Glover's performance.

For judge Nicki Minaj, the performance was personal.

"I remember having absolutely nothing and locking myself in my room and being little and crying listening to that song over and over ... because I believed every word ... ," she said. "I believed that there was nothing that I couldn't do,"

While Minaj said Glover "tore that song up," she also said Glover's performance sent an even bigger message.

"For women, for people everywhere, for Boston...everybody needs to feel that right now," Minaj said.

Last week, judge Randy Jackson called Glover's take on The Cure's "Lovesong" one of the best performances ever on the show. With 1.3 million views, it has the most YouTube views of any of performance in the Top 10 this season.

He felt the same way Wednesday.

"Once again, that was the best vocal of the night," he said.

It was Glover's second performance of the night. Her first was Paula Abdul's "Straight Up," which also received all positive comments from the judges.

Glover's mother, Carole, grandmother, Albertha Middleton, and three of her cousins were in the audience.

Glover will find out whether she advances to the Top 4 during the results show, which airs from 8 to 9 p.m. tonight on Fox.
