Recreation Brief, April 17: Sparklers win AAU gymnastics titles

The Sports Academy Sparklers gymnastics program won a pair of team titles over the weekend in the South Carolina AAU State Championships. The Sparklers' Level 3 and Level 4 Novice teams won their divisions at the meet, which was held April 12-14 at York Prepatory School in Rock Hill.

Oakley Magbee, 9, led the Level 3 team to victory, winning five gold medals while competing in her first gymnastics meet. She took first in the vault, uneven parallel bars, balance beam, floor exercise and all-around. Haylie Collinson, 8, also won an individual gold on beam.

In the level 4 novice division, the Sparklers' Mallie O'Rourke, 6, won five gold medals. Teammate Hope Locke, 10, won the gold medal on bars, beam and all-around.

The Sparklers Level 4 team finshed fourth. Madalyn West, 8, led the way, picking up first-place finishes in the bars, beam and all-around. Lily Aune, 8, also finished in the top three in all five categories, including a gold in the vault. Mia McBride, 9, won gold on beam.
