Mitchelville Preservation Project to dedicate Toni Morrison bench

info@islandpacket.comApril 12, 2013

The Mitchelville Preservation Project and the Toni Morrison Society will dedicate the "Bench by the Road" at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Mitchelville Freedom Park on Hilton Head Island.

The memorial is part of an initiative inspired by Morrison's interview with World Magazine about the absence of historical markers honoring the lives of enslaved Africans. The bench will be placed on the grounds of the first self-governed freedman's village in the country.

The dedication ceremony will be followed by a butterfly release.

Details: Those interested in attending should contact Joyce Wright at jwright@mitchelvillepreservationproject.org by Sunday.
