A man was shot in the leg during a late-night altercation outside a St. Helena home on Thursday, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies arrived at a Saxonville Road residence about 10 p.m. for the report of a gunshot. They found a 40-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his leg, according to a news release.

The man said the shooting occurred outside a Shiny Road home when he had been standing outside with several other people. A man suddenly approached and started shooting at him, the release said.

The suspect fired several rounds before fleeing on foot.

The victim got into his car, called 911 and drove home. He said the shooting might have been related to an on-going dispute between the two about money, according to the release.

The victim was taken to Beaufort Memorial Hospital and was treated and released.

The suspect had not been identified as of Friday morning.

Anyone with information is asked to call Investigator Cpl. L. Resto at 843-255-3510 or Crimestoppers, 888-274-6372.
