Junior Service League of Beaufort's annual barbecue set for April 13

info@islandpacket.comApril 6, 2013

After spending the afternoon decorating, Junior Service League of Beaufort members Penny Abbott, Amanda Sutcliffe-Jones, Kristin Brady, Kristin Dubrowski, Amy Geier, Emily Harris and Fripp Langford are ready to enjoy last year's barbecue.

Tickets to the barbecue are $40. Details: www.juniorserviceleagueofbeaufort.org, 843-252-1477

It might be classified as a cookout, but the Junior Service League of Beaufort's annual barbecue is not your usual beer and ribs fest. This outdoor event has a woman's touch that includes a color theme, flower arrangements and tablecloths tied with bows.

In its eighth year, the April 13 affair returns to the historic Arsenal on Craven Street in downtown Beaufort. The festivities take place from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. in the courtyard of the brick and tabby building.

The barbecue is the group's signature event.

Guests will enjoy cocktails from an open bar and a pulled pork dinner catered by Hawg Wild Barbeque of Ridgeland. The Coastal Breeze Band from Columbia will perform.

The event will feature a silent auction that includes items such as Botox treatments by Weniger Plastic Surgery, a salon package from Halo Salon and a two-hour fly-fishing lesson from Captain Owen Plair.

The barbecue is the only fundraiser for the 48 active member, women-only service league. Proceeds from the event go to the JSLB's grant program, which provides funding to nonprofit agencies and organizations serving women, children and families in the Beaufort area.

Requests for grants will be accepted through April 22. Applications are available at the group's website, www.juniorserviceleagueofbeaufort.org. A committee will award the grants by the end of May.
