Bicyclist killed in US 278 crash on Hilton Head

April 5, 2013

A 58-year-old Hilton Head Island bicyclist died late Thursday after being struck by a car as he tried to cross William Hilton Parkway, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Michael Christopher Schrammel was pronounced dead at the scene of the 11 p.m. accident. He was struck by a man driving east on Mathews Drive near the Wells Fargo Bank.

An autopsy performed at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston determined Schrammel died from multiple blunt force trauma, according to Beaufort County Deputy Coroner David Ott.

Schrammel was not wearing a helmet, had no lights on the bike and was wearing dark clothing, Ott said.

Highway patrol does not expect to file charges against the driver, but the investigation is continuing.
