Parris Island-area beekeepers urged to cover hives

Beekeepers living within five miles of Marine Corps Recurit Depot Parris Island are urged to keep hives covered the week of April 8-11 when aerial insecticide spraying is scheduled around the island.
Spraying will occur approximately two hours before sundown weather permitting, and is needed to control mosquito and sand flea populations, according to a Parris Island spokeswoman.

The insecticides being used present no threat to humans, plants or animals in the area and have been approved by the Environmental Protection Agency.
