Lawmakers should stay out of doctor-client talks

info@islandpacket.comMarch 31, 2013

Say it ain't so. Three of my favorite legislators, Reps. Shannon Erickson, Weston Newton and Bill Herbkersman got caught up in the gun debate (as described in The Greenville News editorial published Monday) and are willing to intrude on the physician- patient relationship.

What's next lawyer-client or clergy-parishioner conversations? How do we police this? By planting a wire in a patient's dressing gown? In a client's suit jacket? Or by bugging the confessional? Are there no safeguards for free speech in our confidential relationships with professionals of proven integrity? I can hardly believe that I have to write this letter, as it leaves one speechless.
