Hilton Head High baseball team suffers first loss of season

SOFTBALL

Thomas Heyward 2, Colleton Prep 0: Selice Daley struck out 13 batters and scattered just three hits and two walks in the complete game shutout.

Eighth grader Hannah Cannon (1 for 3) brought home the first run of the night for the Rebels on a double off the fence before Brielle Jungblut (2 for 4) stole home on a throw to first in the sixth. Morgan Peeples also went 2 for 3 for Thomas Heyward.

"That was a very veteran team, a very good team," coach Bob Layman said. " ... It was a very good win."

The Rebels (8-5) travels to Summerville tonight to take on Pinewood Prep.

Bluffton 4, Fort Dorchester 1: Courtney Smith struck out 12 in a complete game effort as the Bobcats moved to 3-1 in Region 8-AAAA.

Seven batters went 1 for 3 for the Bobcats (9-1, 3-1), which included triples from Morganne Parker, Jordyn Parker and Kim Kerby. Smith scattered seven hits in the win.

The Bobcats travel to Beaufort High Friday at 7 p.m.

Battery Creek 13, Ridgeland-Hardeeville 12: The Dolphins used a six-run fifth inning to erase what at one point was a 5-0 deficit before holding on for the victory.

Lauren Carter's 4 for 4 performance led the way for Battery Creek. The Dolphins standout, who tallied a double and a triple, drove in five while also scoring four runs. Teammate Tina Kwok added a single, triple, 2 RBIs and two runs.

Battery Creek (9-2, 8-0 Region 6-AA) returns to action April 8 at Bishop England.

Beaufort High 5, Colleton County 0: Michelle Brown went 4 for 4 and Chelsea Welty added a home run as the Eagles picked up their second Region 8-AAAA win of the season.

Jenny Mullins earned the win for Beaufort High (15-5, 2-2), allowing four hits and two walks to go along with four strikeouts. Natalie Moore and Maddie Berry also tallied doubles for the Eagles, who are at home Friday at 7 p.m. against Bluffton.

JV: Beaufort High 6, Colleton County 0

Berkeley 10, Hilton Head High 1: Caylee Osborne doubled and Kensley Phillips added a single for the Seahawks, who fell to 4-8.

Hilton Head High is off until facing Thomas Heyward on April 8.

BASEBALL

Berkeley 3, Hilton Head High 2 (10 innings): The Seahawks scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning on a squeeze bunt by Aaron Facenda, but Berkeley battled back to walk off on a sacrifice fly in the 10th to remain undefeated.

Hilton Head High, which suffered its first loss of the season, tied the score at 1-1 in the seventh. The Seahawks (8-1, 5-1 Region 8-AAA) took a 2-1 lead an inning later, but Berkeley (12-0, 5-0) tallied a game-tying sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the frame before winning it two innings later off Seahawks pitcher Jake Kizer (1-1).

Starting pitcher Mat Clark allowed one run on six hits with four strikeouts in seven innings while Storm Grisham tallied a single and a triple at the plate.

The Seahawks step out of region play Friday night when they host West High School (Tenn.) at 7 p.m.

Beaufort High 3, Colleton County 0: Carson Gregory picked up the win with a complete-game shutout while also going 1 for 2 at the plate with an RBI.

David Tilton went 1 for 3 with two runs scored while Stephen Baggett went 1 for 3 with an RBI. Gregory allowed just three hits while striking out 11 batters in the win.

The Eagles (5-5) continue region play at Bluffton Friday at 7 p.m.

BOYS LACROSSE

Hilton Head High 8, Academic Magnet 3: Three Seahawks tallied multiple goals and Hilton Head High notched nine saves for its third consecutive win.

Nate Jones, Will Urbin and Ross Lovette each netted two goals for the Seahawks (6-4), while Thomas Farrell and Tucker Roberts also added a goal of their own. Goalkeepers Sam Jones and Madison Gayle combined for the nine saves as the two rotated throughout the game.

Hilton Head High is back on the field Friday at 6 p.m. for Senior Night against Socastee.

GOLF

Ashley Ridge 152, Summerville 157, Beaufort High 159, Fort Dorchester 168, Colleton County 217: Beaufort High finished third in a Region 8-AAAA competition thanks to Josh Fickes' 37.

Summerville's Christian Wood carded the low round of the day with a 36. Beaufort High's other golfers were Matthew Campbell (39), Tommy Earl (40), Alex Porter (43) and Keaton Butler (44).

The Eagles will take part in the county match on April 5 at Island West in Bluffton.

TRACK & FIELD

Big 5 at Colleton County: The Beaufort High boys team took first place in 12 different events, headlined by Brandon Pratt's victories in the 800m, 1600m and the 3200m. The Eagles girls team took home nine first place finishes while Battery Creek's boys and girls teams also had strong showings.
