Safety, common sense should be used on 278

info@islandpacket.comMarch 27, 2013

Local drivers need to be reminded that U.S. 278 is not a limited-access interstate, but a service road for all who live, work and shop along its length.

It is not just a speedway for those bound for Hilton Head Island. There is, therefore, no left-hand passing lane, but two or three lanes from which, and into which, traffic is constantly coming and going, as destinations require. Drivers are expected to signal lane changes and observe posted speed limits.

Safety also would also be improved if drivers remembered the turning lane rule when entering U.S. 278. When turning left onto the highway, use the left lane of its two or three lanes, and when turning right onto the highway, use its right lane.
