SHANNON WINS STATE TITLE IN BALANCE BEAM

Hannah Shannon, a sophomore at Beaufort High School, recently won a state championship in the balance beam while competing for the Sports Academy Sparklers gymnastics team.

Shannon claimed the title in the Level 9 Senior C Division with a team record score of 9.225 in the South Carolina USAG Level 5-10 Championships at Winthrop University in Rock Hill on March 23-25.

She also finished fourth on vault and seventh in the all-around with a total of 34.075, which qualified her for the Region 8 Level 9 meet being held April 11-14 in Jackson, Miss. Shannon managed to qualify despite dealing with a chipped bone in her thumb that didn't allow her much time to work on her uneven parallel bars routine. She was able to post a score of 7.1 on bars, just pushing her all-around score over the national qualifying mark of 34.

This is the fifth straight year she has qualified for the Region 8 regionals at Level 8 and 9.

In the Level 7 B Division, Carol Ann Rosenblum and Alyssa Pierce of Hilton Head Island Gymnastics both posted scores of 9.0 in the vault, finishing in a tie for fifth. Rosenblum also was eighth on the bars.

In the Level 6 E division, Sports Academy's Blair Scheer, a freshman at Battery Creek High School, scored a personal best of 9.15 on floor exercise to win the bronze medal. The Sparklers' Lauren Angus, a sixth-grader at Beaufort Middle School, placed fifth on floor in the Level 6 D Division with a season-high 9.1.

The Sparklers' Level 3-5 gymnasts travel to Rock Hill on April 13-14 for the state AAU District Championships.
