High School Roundup, March 26: HHCA tops Beaufort High in tennis clash of Eagles

In a battle of the Eagles, Hilton Head Christian (4-2) won every singles match on the way to a 5-1 boys tennis victory over Beaufort High (5-6).

The closest match came at No. 1 singles, where HHCA's Charlie Drake was a 6-2, 6-4 winner over Alex Angus.

Beaufort High plays Tuesday at Colleton County. Hilton Head Christian hosts Pinewood Prep on Thursday.

BASEBALL

Beaufort High 5, Ashley Ridge 0: Bradley Brown hurled a complete-game, two-hit shutout, striking out two for the Eagles (4-5, 2-1 Region 8-AAAA).

"He just gets ground ball after ground ball after ground ball," Beaufort High coach Scott Mullen said. "He's just done a great job for us this year."

At the plate for Beaufort High, Alex Silon went 3 for 4 with an RBI, Steven Baggett was 1 for 3 with two RBIs and Carson Gregory was 2 for 4 with an RBI.

The Eagles play Wednesday at Colleton County.

Hilton Head Island 10, Hanahan 2: Andrew Dill (three innings pitched) and winner Jake Kizer (four innings pitched) combined to limit Hanahan to just four hits.

Aaron Facenda had a pair of hits and three RBIs for Hilton Head Island, while Dillon Heffner added two hits and a RBI.

The Seahawks (8-0, 5-0 Region 8-AAA) stranded eight runners and played errorless ball.

Thomas Heyward 12, Colleton Prep 2: Seth Jones struck out seven and allowed just two hits and one earned run over 5 1/3 innings to earn the win for the Rebels (5-4).

At the plate, Ryan Day, Connor Driscoll, Bryan Lee Wade and J.D. Tuten each went 2 for 3. Day had three. Day had three RBIs and Driskill added two.

Bishop England 4, Battery Creek 1: Thomas Smith pitched a complete game, striking out six and allowing just earned run in a losing effort for the Dolphins.

Clyde Parker singled and walked for Battery Creek, which plays Friday at Woodland.

SOFTBALL

Bluffton 6, Summerville 4: Morganne Parker drove in two of the Bobcats' three runs on the fifth and two of their three runs in the sixth to lead Bluffton to a win over third-ranked Summerville.

Parker finished 4 for 4 with four RBIs and two runs scored -- she was responsible for every Bobcat run.

On the mound, Courtney Smith threw a complete-game five-hitter for Bluffton (8-1, 2-1), which hosts Ft. Dorchester on Wednesday.

Ashley Ridge 5, Beaufort High 0: Three errors were costly as Beaufort High slipped to 14-5 overall and 1-2 in the region.

Losing pitcher Jenny Mullins went the distance, allowing four hits. She struck out five and walked one.

Michelle Brown, Natalie Moore and Pressley Thomas had two hits each for the Eagles.

Beaufort High next hosts Colleton County on Wednesday.

Hanahan 4, Hilton Head Island 0: The Seahawks (4-7), who got six strikeouts from pitcher Whitney Halley, play at Berkeley on Wednesday.

BOYS LACROSSE

Hilton Head Island 8, Benedictine 7: Nate Jones scored three times and Tucker Roberts scored twice, including the game-winner, to boost the Seahawks.

Will Urvin, Thomas Farrell and Alex Matousek also scored for Hilton Head Island (5-4).

The Seahawks' Sam Jones and Madison Gayle split time in goal.
